Yoga is a traditional movement & stillness practice used as a means to unite the mind, body & spirit through physical postures, mindfulness, breath work, and meditation. We can change the habitual reactions of the mind and reconnect the body to the subtle responses of our psyche. Often the tension held in the body can be directly linked to the holding patterns of the unconscious mind. Yoga helps to create new pathways and teaches students to recognize their own inner chatter (mind) and calm the nervous system responses in the body. Once the nervous system is calm, meditation can help deepen self-awareness and eventually shift negative patterns into new positive ones. There is extensive research on the effect of yoga & meditation like the cortical thickness of the hippocampus increasing in grey-matter (the part of the brain that helps us learn), increase density of the posterior cingulate (decreasing the wandering mind giving a more realistic sense of self) or the shrinking the Amygdala (our ‘fear’ center).
