Amanda Dufton Pfaff

About Amanda

Amanda Dufton Pfaff is a Registered Social Worker with a Master of Social Work degree. Initially working with children and youth, Amanda has predominantly worked in the field of inpatient and community adult mental health for the past 12 years. Her experience has informed her understanding of how profoundly mental health is impacted by relationships. Because of this, in her counselling practice, Amanda offers sessions for both individuals who have a personal experience of mental health challenges and also the network of people around them such as family members, friends, partners and colleagues. Within the counselling relationship, Amanda works with individuals to consider alternate perspectives of their current situation, to build resilience through learning new self-care strategies, to understand and establish healthy boundaries, and by trying out new ways to respond to their relationships. Also, Amanda’s comfort with and knowledge of the mental health system means clients have an opportunity to understand resources available locally, and how to go about accessing if interested.

Training

Amanda has received additional training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Yoga, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Amanda draws upon strategies from all her training to tailor interventions to match each individual’s unique needs.

Experience

Mental health challenges can present in many different forms. Amanda has experience supporting individuals with various challenges associated with mental health and addiction issues including communication and relationship breakdowns, difficulty making decisions and achieving goals, compromised work or school performance, and changes with functioning in day-to-day tasks. Amanda’s approach is to support individuals with identifying goals for the counselling process, and, in turn, using the counselling time to break goals down into achievable tasks that move clients one step closer to feeling better.
