Certified Imago Therapist
My graduate degree was earned in clinical social work in 1988 from Wilfrid Laurier University, in Waterloo, Ontario. I am registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
My first degree has a focus on English Literature. My love of language, stories and literature influences my work as a therapist. Increasingly my focus has become about relationships. I believe it is in the depth of human connection that real understanding and healing can occur.
As a lifelong resident of Waterloo Region, I am committed to this location as a home for myself and my family.
“After 11 and a half years of loving service, my beautiful therapy dog, Silah, has died. She was an amazing companion and her beautiful gentle spirit is deeply missed.”
Located just West of Waterloo, and within an easy drive of Kitchener, Elora, Listowel, Stratford, Elmira, Cambridge, Guelph and surrounding areas, the centre offers privacy and quiet in our country setting in Wilmot Township.
I began my private practice in 1988 at Southern Ontario Counselling Centre. Over the past 29 years I have enjoyed working with individuals, couples and groups.
I am very conscious of the importance of the health of the relationship between client and therapist. The emotional safety and trust which develops is essential to a productive healing process and self exploration process.
I am a certified IMAGO (relationship) therapist, an accredited EMDR (technique for addressing trauma and anxiety) practitioner, and am certified to practice hypnotherapy. My great love is working to support personal growth and emotional healing of individuals, and in particular the health of the relationship between couples. Understanding ourselves and finding peace and comfort in our own lives, allows us to accept others and connect more deeply and meaningfully.
Much of my practice is based on a transactional analysis model (see terms). Supporting the development of a strong and healthy ‘adult’ who can function in both normal and stressful situations is key. This involves developing or enhancing problem solving, thinking and coping skills for the here and now as well as exploring past traumas, messages, beliefs and relationships. Learning to regulate emotions is an essential component of this work.
I provide consultation support to small business owners to support the improvement of communication skills and business practices. I also provide clinical supervision to other therapists seeking support in our community. Ongoing personal reflection and learning is a critical component of clinical competency.
I have experience working with people experiencing or coping with such concerns as:
- relationship/marital challenges (Imago therapist)
- anxiety and stress
- conflict/communication issues
- career concerns
- clinical supervision for therapists
- childhood trauma
- grief and loss
- parenting adjustments/difficulties
- post-traumatic stress (EMDR accreditation/hypnosis)
- recovery from illness
- self worth
- sexual abuse issues
- teacher stress
- work stress and challenging employer/employee relations
- …and more
